Located in the centre of San Sebastián, the store proposes a spatial interpretation of Birkenstock’s material universe, translating the logic and honesty of its materials into an architectural language.
The project is built around an almost geological approach to matter. A continuous floor made of local stone gravel runs throughout the space, evoking both the urban textures of the city and its relationship with the natural landscape and the sand. Surfaces are conceived as aggregated, compacted and layered matter, creating an atmosphere that is tactile, dense and essential.
Inspired by the open and spontaneous character of San Sebastián — between culture, nature and artistic tradition — the interiors are organised as a fluid, non-hierarchical landscape. Display elements emerge directly from the ground as volumes integrated within a shared material topography, encouraging an intuitive and relaxed experience.
Materiality plays a central role in the project. Shelving wrapped in natural leather, earthy surfaces, exposed aggregates and sand-cast trays explore a direct relationship between body, object and space. The intervention seeks to construct atmosphere through the intelligence of materials themselves and their ability to convey weight, tactility and permanence.
Through the use of local materials, low-transformation processes and simple construction techniques, the project proposes a conscious and enduring approach to contemporary retail.
